Metal fencing earns its place where timber struggles: front boundaries that need visibility, side passages that need security, and exposed sites where a solid timber wall would act like a sail. Tubular steel, aluminium slat and wrought-iron style fences all give a strong line with airflow through them.

Around older Christchurch suburbs, iron-style front fences are part of the streetscape — and modern steel versions keep that look with far less upkeep than the originals. Powder-coated finishes in dark greens, blacks and greys sit comfortably against brick, stone and weatherboard, and they do not need the regular staining that timber demands.

Near the coast the specification matters. Salt air off the estuary and the open sea attacks bare steel and cheap fixings first, so coastal jobs should use galvanised or marine-grade coated components, stainless fixings where it counts, and coatings kept intact at cut ends. A fence built for the seaside costs a little more up front and a lot less over its life.

Aluminium slat fencing has become popular for good reasons: it never rusts, it is light enough for wide gates, and the slat spacing can be tuned from near-solid privacy to open airflow. It suits modern homes and rental properties alike, and damaged slats can be swapped individually rather than replacing whole panels.

Gates make or break metal fencing. A pedestrian gate needs a solid post, quality hinges and a latch that meets the strike every time — not just on a calm day. Driveway gates add the question of automation later, so posts and footings should be sized with that in mind even if the motor comes years down the track.
