When to repair your fence — and when to replace it

Every fence reaches a fork in the road: money spent wisely on repairs, or money wasted postponing the inevitable. Knowing which side you are on starts with reading the timber, not guessing.
Walk the line slowly and look at the posts first, because posts decide everything. Push each post at ground level — solid posts barely move, while rotten ones flex or crumble where timber meets soil. If most posts are sound and only one or two have failed, you are firmly in repair territory: new posts go in, the line gets straightened, and the old rails and palings go back up.
Next, check the rails. A rail that is cracked at one fixing can be re-fixed or sistered with a new length. Rails that are soft along most of their length, or that break in the hand, mean the fence's backbone is gone. One soft rail is a repair; soft rails in every bay is a replacement wearing a repair's clothes.
Palings are the cheapest part of the fence and the easiest to overthink. Individual cracked or missing palings can be swapped in minutes and will weather in within a season or two. But when palings are falling across the whole run — when every second one needs a nail — the labour of patching exceeds the cost of starting fresh, and the result never looks straight.
Gates deserve their own verdict. A sagging gate on a sound post usually needs hinges and a latch, not a new gate. A gate whose stiles are rotten, or whose post rocks in oversized soft ground, will never hang right until the post is renewed. Fix the post first, then judge the gate.
The honest test is arithmetic with a horizon. Add up the repair cost, then ask how many more years the repaired fence will give. If repairs buy five straight years for a fraction of replacement, repair. If they buy one wobbly summer before the next bay goes, replace. Any contractor who will not do that sum with you is selling, not advising.
